Where The Mind Is Without Fear

Click to show

Where the mind is without fear and
the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken
up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards
perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost
its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-
widening thought and action------
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my
country awake.

Substance of the poem:-

The poet dreams of an ideal country, where man will enjoy freedom in true sense of the term. The freedom means intellectual, moral and spiritual freedom. In such a country, the mind will be free from fear and one can hold his head high. The right to knowledge is for all and there is no pitty consideration of nationality, caste and creed that divide the people. Tagore visualizes a world where man can speak freely and where man will transcend narrowness and self-interest. He will be free from illogical thinking and customs and conventions. Truth and reason will prevail everywhere in such a land of supreme bliss. Lastly, he prays to god to give man strength, so that his mind broadens to noble thoughts and actions. Thus India can be elevated to a higher level and become the country of his dream " heaven of freedom"--- free from all sorts of evils.
